2012-2013 Core Curriculum Plan

Our 2012-2013 Homeschool Plan For Bible, Math, Phonics, Reading, English

Hannah 10th grade, Aaron 8th Grade, Isaiah 3rd Grade Aspie, Bethany 2nd Grade

Bible & Personal Growth:

Prayer, Read Proverb of the Day, Read from Wisdom and the Millers by Mildred A Martin, Work on Memory Verses (Charlotte Mason Pack 3) & Read Christian Biographies.  The first will be George Muller by Janet & Geoff Benge.

*Hannah will also be doing a personal devotion each day-including Bible Truths by Bob Jones University Press for 11th Grade, read "I Kissed Dating Goodbye" and keeping a prayer journal.
*Aaron will also be doing a personal devotion each day-including Bible Truths for 8th Grade and reading selected books including "Do Hard Things" by the Harris Brothers .

Greg will be going through the Book of Acts during evening devotions with the kids approx 3x per week.

Math:

Hannah: Math (50) Elementary College Algebra
Math (60) Geometry (Both courses at Victorvalley College for Dual Credit)

Aaron:  Teaching Textbooks: Algebra 1, Assorted Logic Puzzles and Chess

Isaiah:  Christian Light Publishing books 301-310 Note: these books are much in concept like Saxon but much less time consuming to teach!  Daily Flash Card Drill and Chess.

Bethany:  Christian Light Publishing books 103-110, flashcards and hands on math play.

Phonics & Reading:

Hannah:  Will be choosing literature based on her SAT for Christian Student Preparation Guide and will be expected to complete one book review each month.  Hannah loves reading all kinds of literature and a book is never far from her hand so I've chosen to allow her much freedom of choice in this area.

Aaron:  Will be reading and reviewing books based upon US History experiences this year. For certain this will include Rifles for Watie and Biographies of famous Americans.

Isaiah & Bethany:  Will be enjoying great books from regular Library trips and US History reading in books such as "Squanto, Friend of the Pilgrims", "Pedro's Journal," "Matchlock Gun" and many more!

For Phonics Isaiah will have 1 on 1 tutoring for as long as he needs-right now we are working through "the Reading Lesson" and next we will perhaps do "Phonics Pathways"  it is a bit of hit and miss but we will keep plugging along until he is a proficient reader!  Both Children will be doing regular narrations and notebooking as well  as going through Sing, Spell, Read & Write Level II Grand Tour workbooks.

English:

Hannah will be completing English Writing Assignments from her SAT Prep Guide (about 1 per week), Doing Grammar, Spelling and technical skills through Christian Light Publishing English I for High Schoolers.

Aaron will be doing "Writing Trails in American History"  based upon the Excellence in Writing Program methods.  He will be using Christian Light Publishing for 8th grade English for Spelling, Grammar, Vocabulary and Technical Skills.

*  We have been doing this for a long time :0)  Please remember what works for us may not be what works for you!  We like to keep things as simple as possible and really believe that "Less is often More"  in that we would rather learn more from actually doing than just reading books-so we try not to get so bogged down with curriculum that we can not just pick up and experience life as it is happening!

  • 9:30 Spend an hour with Isaiah doing Math, Phonics & Reading
  • 10:30 PE & lunch for Isaiah & Aaron-Do Phonics, Math & Reading with Bethany

  • 1:00  Check on Big kids, do spelling tests, memory verses and planning
  • 2:00  Mom & Kids finish chores on list (10 min in 6 rooms)
  • 8:00 Dad does devotion with the kids-Mom checks work & straightens up & preps for next day
  • 9:00 All kids prayed over & tucked in..  Big kids can read or draw in their rooms until 10

This is the basic plan for our school days and it has been going pretty smooth so far.  I had to change some subjects for Bethany & Isaiah as they just took too long to complete.. so for now Saxon Phonics & Saxon Math have gone on the shelf and we have switched to Abeka Math & flash cards & Starfall and Adventures in Phonics and lots of reading aloud for phonics & reading..  I really like the Charlotte Mason approach with Isaiah & Bethany.. doing no more than 20 min on one subject and then changing to something completely different.
